Book Review: Jackaby By William Ritter

Cover: I absolutely LOVE this cover. I love the colors and I love the style. It tells so much about the book without giving anything away. BEAUTIFUL!

Synopsis:Newly arrived in New Fiddleham, New England, 1892, and in need of a job, Abigail Rook meets R. F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary–including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackaby’s assistant. On her first day, Abigail finds herself in the midst of a thrilling case: A serial killer is on the loose. The police are convinced it’s an ordinary villain, but Jackaby is certain it’s a nonhuman creature, whose existence the police–with the exception of a handsome young detective named Charlie Cane–deny.

Doctor Who meets Sherlock in William Ritter’s debut novel, which features a detective of the paranormal as seen through the eyes of his adventurous and intelligent assistant in a tale brimming with cheeky humor and a dose of the macabre.

Goodreads Rating: 5 out of 5.

Review: Jackaby by William Ritter is one of my new all time favorite books. It is a combination of Sherlock Holmes meets Doctor Who, which if you are a fan of these shows you are going to LOVE this book. The story follows Abigail Rook who sails from England to New Fiddleham in 1892. She has the need for adventure in her life, which is why she left home. When she arrives in New Fiddleham she has little to no money and a few select items of clothing. While in a bar she meets R.F. Jackaby a strange and delightful character. He is a detective of the paranormal. Jackaby while he reminds me of Benedict Cumberbatch’s version of Sherlock Holmes he does posses qualities that remind of Matt Smith’s portrayal of the Doctor. While this is a short book, only 299 pages, it is fast paced and it flows really well. It draws you into the world and it makes you feel like you are right there alongside Jackaby and Abigail Rook. From what I understand this is not a stand alone book, I believe it is going to be a series, though I do not know how many books there will be. I will have to do some research and find out! Once I do though I will let you guys know. I am so excited to see how the story will progress. While there are no cliff hangers at the end and everything is tied up I believe there is so many ways that this story can develop. So if you have had not had a chance to check this book out yet I suggest that you do. You will be in for one heck of a ride. If you have had the chance to read it I would love to hear what you guys think!!! Let me know in the comment section below.
